A Good July

I had to laugh the morning when I read the topic of my last post on how I was one of the finalists for a contest at Landscape Photography Magazine. Well, for the July, 2023 issue of that Magazine, I had the same thing happen with by image of he red lobster shack at Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia, Being a finalists was quite an accomplishment was there was an unusually high number of fellow photographers who submitted images, so to be among the top of the list of 200 or so submissions from around the world is something to be proud of.

For those that follow this web site, you may know that I will be the Featured Artist for the Art by the Sea Gallery, so it is kind of nice to be also featured twice in Landscape Photography Magazine in their July issue. The second image was one o Preveril Castle in Derbyshire England.

I do not feel too bad as the winner had an amazing image of the Banska Stiavinca in Slovakia. My image of the waves breaking on the rocks at Cape Arago is above and the article is below

Matte Hanna Wins 2nd Place

We are proud to report that Art by the Sea Gallery’s Matte Hanna has earned 2nd place in Digital Photo’s Best of 2021 contest with his image “Super Flower Blood Moon Eclipse,”. This is Matta’s comments about the image:

“This shot was taken in Bandon, Oregon, during the Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse. I was excited knowing that I would get a full view of the event on the Oregon coast if the skies remained clear, but the weather report was a mixed bag. I had chosen this location in advance for the incredible formations of sea stacks on the Pacific Ocean which helped created an otherworldly landscape and atmosphere.

“I waited through the night until the tide was low enough to walk out onto the sand to the location I had selected and then began to set up for the composition of the moon in eclipse totality over the sea stacks. The skies were becoming partially foggy but stayed just clear enough to capture this image. Minutes after this shot was taken, the Pacific coastal fog and clouds swallowed up the sky leaving no trace of the moon or eclipse.”

What is it that makes this image so delightful? First of all, it’s the image’s simple presentation with just a young girl at the edge of the pond and a couple of model sailing boats in the background. But one wants to smile because her attire is just so Parisian and one would surely know where she lived without having to say so. Secondly, she is placed on the right side of the image looking into the images left beyond the boats. It would not work if she were in the middle or on the left side because there would be blank spaces on the right that would detract from the narrative. One needs that space to frame the story.  She is obviously concentrating and as mentioned, looking past the sailing boats and it makes you wonder what it is that has captured her attention. Because I slightly used a dark vignetting and because of the color of her attire, one’s eye is immediately drawn to her: her cute hair style, the striped skirt, even her white, slightly discolored sandals - probably from walking on the dirt paths of the garden. All of these elements make her so appealing and alive. It was a warm day but a little cloudy in the early fall.

One takes pictures to tell stores, to capture a moment, but with thought…..

Ok, one additional people image. Unlike the previous one, the person in this image is on the right looking out of the frame, early morning in Havana, Cuba on the Malecon and he is looking out at Florida and the US. One wonders what he is thinking about before he heads off to whatever he is going to do for the day. Is he thinking of family or friends? He must be carrying a musical instrument of some sort. Unlike the previous image, I have the hotel and buildings of Havana to balance the image on the left. ⁣⁣ At some point I will talk about the rule of thirds and/or the Golden Mean
